THE APPLICATION PROCESS AT A GLANCE
The Center's fellowship program operates under agreements between ARCE and the Egyptian government. These agreements facilitate fellows' access to libraries, museums, archives, monuments and other research venues. One condition of the protocols, as in other countries, is the formal review and approval of research projects by either the Egyptian Ministry of Higher Education or the Supreme Council of Antiquities. As a consequence, the application process comprises four basic stages, several of which take place concurrently:
1. Application review and conditional approval by the ARCE Fellowship Committee
2. Applicant acceptance of the fellowship and associated conditions
3. Final approval and security clearance from the relevant Egyptian authority for proposed research
4. Confirmation of funding by the granting organization(s)
All applicants must submit three letters of recommendation. Predoctoral applicants must submit a fourth recommendation attesting to their capacity in ancient or modern languages as related to their proposed research. All recommendations must be received by the January 15, 2010 deadline.

IMPORTANT NOTES FOR ALL APPLICANTS
1. Only applicants conducting archival research must complete the Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE) forms found on this website. The application should be completed in English and security forms completed in Arabic. In addition, a 100-word abstract of your proposal must be submitted in Arabic. You may translate the abstract that is requested on the ARCE application form to simplify the process. All application materials should be scanned and sent as PDF files.
2. Applicants conducting archaeological research or requiring access to monuments will be working under the Supreme Council of Antiquities and should not complete the MoHE forms. Successful applicants will be notified and instructed to submit a detailed proposal in letter format (in English) and to complete an SCA security form.
3. In compliance with SCA rules, Fellows are not permitted to participate in expeditions or any type of excavations during their fellowship tenure. Inclusion in an expedition before or after the fellowship period requires the expedition leader to file a separate set of forms on behalf of his/her expedition members. Should a fellow wish to participate in an expedition either before or during a hiatus in his/her fellowship tenure, the fellow should allow for a two-week break between the end of the expedition and the beginning the fellowship. This break should be reflected in the proposed fellowship dates indicated on the application and in the detailed proposal you will be asked to submit once your application has been conditionally approved.
PREFERRED SUBMITTAL METHOD
Application forms can be found here. Please submit all materials electronically. The MoHE forms will have to be scanned. Original letters of recommendation and transcripts (if applicable) may also be scanned and sent electronically. Scanned documents should be saved as "screen size" which is roughly 2MB or less. Materials that you cannot scan and send electronically as PDF or JPG files may be faxed instead to the ARCE San Antonio office to the attention of Ms. Djodi Deutsch, Coordinator of Academic Programs. If you are faxing documents please send an email to fellows@arce.org indicating which items have been faxed to the San Antonio office. Contact information for the San Antonio Office is:
