Conservation of a Late-Roman Pigeon Tower in the Kharga Oasis

AMERICAN UNIVERSITY IN CAIRO, CAIRO

Grantee: Salima Ikram, American University in Cairo, Cairo

Objective: This project aims to repair and conserve a late-Roman pigeon tower, once home to more than a thousand birds. The structure preserves many details of great intrinsic interest such as nesting niches, stairs and windows designed to facilitate avian access. The tower is probably the best-preserved example of this form of early industrial architecture in Egypt.
