Under the direction of Dr. Mark Lehner of Ancient Egypt Research Associates (AERA), the ARCE Field School has won public recognition from the SCA (now the Ministry of State for Antiquities, or MSA), and is a successful capacity building project that garners expertise from the international archaeological community to share knowledge about excavation, recording and conservation techniques and standards in a "hands-on" environment.
In April 2011, the 3rd season was launched in Luxor go analyze material that the Salvage Archaeology Field School excavated from the remaining old Luxor mound before modern construction cleared the area. This mound was nearly as high as a two-story building. As each layer was excavated, recovered items were documented and prepared for further analysis.
